How to Begin Blogging: Fining Your Niche

Because this blog is geared toward moms that are getting into or already a part of the blogging community I want to start by saying don’t typecast yourself just because you are a mom doesn’t mean you have to be a “mommy” blogger.

You may be asking what I mean by that, well I mean don’t think that you have to spend your time blogging about baking cupcakes, scrap booking and your kids (all of these are fine topics if you want to write about them but you don’t have to) it is your blog and you are free to be whomever you want to be on it.

If you want to escape from the hum drum that is your life and write about something racy have at it don’t think that just because you have the title of mom that your blog has to be about your kids or even has to be family friendly because plain and simple it doesn’t have to be. Your blog is what you make it.

The biggest suggestion I can give here is write about the things that you want to write about don’t try to be the carbon copy of someone else and don’t write about things that aren’t that big of a deal to you, if you hate cooking don’t write about it plain and simple.

Your readers will be able to tell if you have a passion for what you are writing about so pick something that you enjoy talking about and run with it. For example I love to help people and I love blogging and I especially love talking about blogging in a manner that is helpful to those that read it. So for me I found my passion and I am running with it I have another blog were I talk about my other passion and that’s being a mother so have two passions and two blogs.

Pick your niche wisely and then stick with it. I can’t stress enough to pick your niche wisely because you can’t go from having an all coupon blog to wanting to talk about inner workings of computers it’s not cohesive and it doesn’t work.

So really think hard about the niche that you choose and then stay on topic. Your readers will come to expect a particular thing from you and through your blog they will begin to trust your expertise or insight on whatever you are writing about so don’t go making sharp left turns in the opposite direction otherwise you may lose a chunk of your audience because they will be confused as to what you are doing.

In closing just stay focused and on topic. Keep in mind that you can write on just about anything as long as you understand the art of tying it back in to your niche/topic.

Welcome to the Design Faerie

Hello Everyone,

I am making this post to give a brief over view of what the Do it Yourself blog portion of the Design Faerie is all about.   I believe in empowering people to do things themselves and with the right set of tools you can do just that.  I have been a blogger for a number of years and it is truly a passion of mine.  I have stepped away from the personal blogging scene now for about a year in order to focus more on my transition from Active Duty Coast Guard to becoming a civilian.  After spending the last 6 years of my life as a service member I have had to adjust to life outside of the organization.

As I begin to transition back to a life of normalcy I am able to share my experiences in blogging with all of you.  This blog will discuss a range of topics from doing your own marketing, SEO, design tips and trick and so much more.

Check back often because I post regularly twice a week with new articles to give your blog a head start so that you can set yourself apart from the crowd.  I also welcome any questions you may have and am always available by email.
